Description This course explores the founding of the American republic from the revolution through the early republic by focusing on the thought and practice of several leading figures including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Combining biographical materials and primary sources, this course places the lives of these men within the context and political dynamics of the new nation with a particular focus on the problem of constitutional founding and the first party system.
