Area
Title East Central Europe in the 20th Century
Description In this course we will examine politics and culture of East Central Europe (ECE). Situated between Germany and Russia ECE was at the crossroads of 20th century totalitarian projects initiated by Nazi Germany and Bolshevik Russia. Endowed with liberal constitutions as a result of the Versailles Treaty, states in the region experienced a full spectrum of political regimes. Cultural and intellectual elites experimented with a broad range of ideas and forms of expression. We will study this variety of institutions and cultural artifacts using narrative history, as well as literary essays, works of fiction, poetry, and films produced by ECE.
