Title Technologies and Their Societies: Historical Perspectives
Description This course offers a historical understanding of the role of technology in U.S. history from the 1880s to the present. It is built on the idea that technology is simultaneously a reflection of social and cultural values, and a factor (one of many) in the transformation of those values. Technologies of mass production, mass consumption, and information are emphasized. The role of the engineer in American society is another recurring theme. From factory floors to suburban kitchens, ingenious inventors to angry student demonstrators, Model Ts to Macs, the subjects reflect the diversity of American technologies and technological environments.
Prerequisites P/D/F option is not available for History concentrators.
