Title From Luther to Napoleon: Early Modern Germany, 1495-1806
Description This course traces the tumultuous history of the German lands in the early modern period, from the reforms in the institutions of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1495 until the abolition of the Empire during the Napoleonic Wars (1806). It is designed for students with some background in early modern German history as well as for those who have never done any German history before. Topics covered include the Holy Roman Empire, the Reformation, the Thirty Years War, the Peace of Westphalia, Frederick the Great and the rise of Prussia, the German Enlightenment, The French Revolution in Germany, and the Napoleonic experience.
