Title The 18th Century: Rethinking the Rise of the Novel
Description A reading of major canonical texts in the British eighteenth-century novel tradition, tracing major theories and histories of the rise of the novel, and the accounts these give of what eighteenth-century novels "do" and "mean" for intellectual histories of the Enlightenment. Course pays particular attention to religion and belief in order to approach afresh the social, political and literary significance of eighteenth-century novels.
