Description Physics of solar cells and resulting material requirements. Focus on highly efficient silicon solar cells. Absorption of light, pn junction theory and carrier transport, theory of carrier generation and recombination in the bulk and at interfaces, contacts, components of cell efficiency. Cell design, cell models and techniques for loss minimization. Growth of silicon material, technology of cell and module fabrication. Evaluation of cell and module performance. Application of physical principles to concentrator and thin film solar cells.
Prerequisites A course in solid-state or semiconductor physics, or in solid-state chemistry.
